Bankruptcy means bad news for all business owners, but entails a particular frustration to the independent operators who may have been operating tight financial ship, only to have their parents as they arise. In the best case, franchisees continue with business as usual, with some adjustments to help drive revenue or reduce the franchisor overheads. In the case of restaurants, Bennigan's, which filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in July 2008, franchise operators, while the company survived owned shops closed.

"One problem for Bennigan's was that the company had too many shops owned. When the economy changed, the company owned stores were no longer profitable and were losing money more rapidly that dealers were paying royalties, "said Siebert." But even if they are not profitable, it is difficult to actually lose money in a franchise .
