For franchisees, the bankrupt parent does not necessarily mean the end of the line. Companies as diverse as Denny's, Boston Market, Days Inn and 7-Eleven every filed for Chapter 11, and all are still viable.
"The bankruptcy of the franchise is not necessarily bad for the franchise system or of franchises," said Alisa Harrison, spokeswoman for the International Franchise Association. "There have been cases where the bankruptcy and restructuring in fact result in a stronger network operators, with a stronger financial management in business headquarters and the strongest brand position. "Before that, however, must do so through of bankruptcy.

In the best case, franchisees continue with business as usual, with some adjustments to help drive revenue or reduce the franchisor overheads. In the worst cases, the franchisor can selectively delete some stores to try to increase net profits. Franchisees often have little involvement in this process.
In the case of restaurants, Bennigan's, which filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in July 2008, franchise operators, while the company survived owned shops closed.

"One problem for Bennigan's was that the company had too many shops owned. When the economy changed, the company owned stores were no longer profitable and were losing money more rapidly that dealers were paying royalties, "said Siebert." But even if they are not profitable, it is difficult to actually lose money in a franchise .

When changes in bankruptcy franchised small business owners, they need to put the word, which are open for business, even as its parent company sends press releases downplaying the seriousness of the situation, which of course makes things worse. Enduring problems supply can sometimes mean cutting out the middleman and work directly with vendors, one of many new experiences that await the owners move on their own.
