What type of home gym is used and why?

We are investigating, and ultimately going to buy a home gym (new or used). We have to shrink to 3 companies, Life Fitness, Precor, or solid body. We do not want to spend $ 1500 on a new one, and realize that most people buy these and use them for a few months at most, so buy one on ebay or whatever is not a problem. Just want to know what other people think if you tried one of these. All and any feedback is appreciated.
