Hard / soft Running Road?

I am a fitness trainer and recently saw on a forum. "Running on roads can be very damaging for the joints and future health. The surgeons are seeing an increase in the number of knee and hip operations they are doing in young healthy individuals who exercise and run regularly … "The way that suggested that any way then it was bad.
