inexpensive pieces of exercise equipment?

I am a university student and I find it very difficult to afford a gym. I wonder if any small working pieces of equipment that can be purchased for just getting some exercise at home. I know that Wal-Mart sells things that are really cheap, like exercise, balls etc, but okay worth it? Any suggestions at all would be helpful.

Exercise balls are great fun, and can be combined with many others, including those used as a seat (you can get a ring for them rolling. Add to that some weights, do not have to be too heavy, especially if you intend to use the ball at the same time. And finally, get some resistance bands and a yoga mat. That the selection is enough to cover almost everything a expensive multi-gym may, without anywhere near the cost or space, and is used with imagination is more fun too!
